The difference between seven card stud hi and seven stud hi/lo is the fact that you can potentially split the pot between the player with the highest hand and lowest hand. The highest hand will always win half of the pot and will sometimes win the entire pot if a low hand doesn't qualify. In order for a low hand to qualify in seven card stud hi/lo you need to have 5 cards that are valued 8 or less without having any pairs in your hand. Aces can be played as a high card and low card and you can use the ace in both your high hand and low hand if you'd like.

Some players don't like the fact that the pot can be split in seven card stud hi/lo, but if you know what you're doing then you can make a lot of money. If you're playing a hand with two other people in the pot you'll end up making money if you win half of the pot with the low hand.
